Andrew Armstrong Purman letters received, and legal documents, 1853-1900.

The collection consists of letters received and related papers (telegrams, legal documents, coal map, slip bill) kept by attorney and state senator Andrew Armstrong Purman. The 1853-1869 letters document Purman's legal practice largely comprising small-scale civil lawsuits and estate affairs of Greene County, Pa., residents and their heirs. Between 1870 and 1872 most of Purman's incoming correspondence concerns his work and influence in the Pennsylvania legislature, including requests for personal and legislative favors. Constituents wrote to him about their concerns, including prohibition, fair pay for Pittsburgh coal miners, protection of his district's fisheries, and the construction of a new Pennsylvania Railroad branch, possibly through the Ligonier Valley, and related transportation issues. As Finance Committee chairman, Purman received letters about education funding, care for the destitute, and requests for personal favors.
